Sun tan lotion is a product that we apply to our skin to protect it from the UVA and UVB rays that penetrate our skin during sun exposure.  Sun tan lotions have UV filters that reflect harmful UV rays.

There is no one product that can be described as the best sun tan lotion. How good or bad a lotion is for you will depend on your skin type and your tanning method. For example, some lotions work well as outdoor sun tanning lotions, when you expose your skin to direct sunlight. There are other sun tan lotions that are more suitable for sunless/indoor tanning. Different sun tan lotions are made for different skin types like normal, oily or dry. Again, sun tan lotions can also be categorized by the SPF that they have (it can range from SPF 8 to SPF 90). 

A recommended sun tan lotion is one which has physical reflective sun blockers and contains inert minerals like zinc oxide, titanium oxide, red petrolatum and/or talc. Out of these constituent minerals, the one that is most effective in blocking the harmful UV rays is pure titanium dioxide. You can use products that have zinc oxide as an active ingredient to protect your skin. It is recommended that you use a sun tan lotion that has pure titanium dioxide rather than encapsulated or micronized titanium dioxide. This is because the pure version remains on your skin and protects it from sun, the encapsulated version enters your skin and is not able to protect your skin as much.
