What should I ideally wear when I tan?

It is advised that you tan wearing clothes that protect the sensitive parts of your body. Otherwise, these parts might get sun burnt due to overexposure to the Sun. you may expose the sensitive parts gradually. Tanning in the nude is potentially dangerous.

Is tanning beneficial for my health?

The UV light emitted from sun or indoor sun tanning equipment produces pre-vitamin D. This pre-vitamin makes Vitamin D which helps in bone formation and its repair, it also helps in the absorption of phosphorus and calcium by the body. It has proved beneficial in prevention of colon and breast cancer. How often should I tan in order to maintain it?

Normally people are advised to tan no more than twice a week. These sessions should have a gap of 48 hours as suggested by the Food and Drug Administration. This is because sunburns or pigmentation might not be fully visible before 12-24 hours. Thus, if you tan before this time period you might unintentionally burn your skin.

Is eye protection necessary during tanning?

This is a genuine concern, and it is encouraged by all responsible and health related agencies. By law, eye protection is a must for tanning. The ultraviolet (UV) rays are not effectively blocked by our eyelids during tanning. Thus, to avoid ill effects, it is advisable to wear eye protection when tanning.

Can I wear contact lenses when tanning indoors?

You should not ideally wear contact lenses when tanning indoors. This is because the heat that is generated from indoor sun tanning equipments can cause the drying of contact lenses leading to discomfort and possible complications.

Will I have wrinkles due to tanning?

Overexposure leads to destruction of resilient fibers present in the lower layer of the skin, causing the upper layer of the skin to sag. Elastosis or wrinkling can be prevented by avoiding overexposure to UV light.
